A plunger lift is a rigless or artificial method of deliquifying a gas well that becomes heavy due to liquid buildup overtime. It helps in maintaining a stable gas production and removing the contaminants from productive natural gas wells.
It is a cost-efficient method of preventing a well from losing its production due to the accumulation of contaminants that slow down the flow rate.
The plunger lift rests at the top of the well at stable flow rates. With decreased production, liquid starts to buildup at the bottom of the tubing, which creates a heavy load with time. The ‘load’ at the bottom causes a reduction in pressure that closes the valve. The plunger lift thus begins to move down from its initial position through the tubing. It causes well shut-in that results in increased pressure inside the annulus. The valve then opens, lifting with it the plunger and the fluids to the top of the well, enabling the free flow in the well.
Plunger lift offers several benefits. From low energy cost, low maintenance cost, low capital investment to low environmental impact, a plunger lift is the safest option for the well. Once it manages to clear away the liquid from the wellbore, it returns the well to the full production stage.
